In this occasion i’m going to show you a practical demostration of all we have seen in the past 6 entries, it will be in two parts, in the first (that) we are goinng to how the foto is make and in the next week we will see what we have to do on the image edition program. From that entry i will change the links position to the end because, if not, it will be so long at the beggining and i wanted to go stright with the explanations. You will see a sneak peak of the last figure i’ve finished, it will be on N. A. W. Magazine nº2 (we are working on it now of course).

NOTE: You will see that the menus are in spanish, but this doesn’t matter due the position of the thins is exactly the same and i will explain all for minimizing any doubt.

Scene:

I have a table on my studio only to make photos, in it i have atatched two lamps with warm light bulbs (this is the colour i use to paint). resting on the table surfase and the wall (it is a window) i put a background which is only a plain cardboard, i used grey because i wanted a neutral background.

Camera and accesoriesTipo de cámara y complementos:

Normaly i use my reflex camera, it is the best i have and with which i get the better results. It is a Canon EOS 1100D with the objective that came with the camera. I have another objective that is a macro one, to get details or take ampliation on a figure part. It doesn’t affect to the configuration, the only difference is that it has not Auto Focus (AF) and we have to focus manually having in mind the distance with the object we want to photograph (all could be seen in the viewfinder and on the preliminar view screen). To the objective i used to use could be desactivated the auto focus and having to do this manually too.

As accesories, i have my tripod that i have said (you could see it as the structura below the camera) and a wired external shooter (there are wireless but this model of camera does not allow them). With that gadget we could minimize trepidations, if we could not have one, we could configurate the shooter with time (2 or 10 seconds. I have an SD card because the camera has not internal memory and a batery (the one which comes with the camera).

The camera has to be ever in Manual (M) position on the selective wheel (in the red rectangle), we could know the desired option because it is which is next to the small white line (in the green rectangle).

Configurating the white balance:

That is something we have to do, if the camera will be used in the same place it is not necessary to configurate every time because the light conditions will be the same. For that i put a white cardboard to which i will do a photo.

When turning onb the camera i touch the button which has a small camera in it (yellow box), changing with that from the configuration screen and the view from the viewfinder to the previewing on the screen (that is which i use to do the photos almost every time). I do a photo to the white backgroung, without catching any else on the picture (if we have activated the auto focus it could hapen that we are unable to do the photo because tere is anything to focus on, we could desactivate it from the small switch on the objective).

Now i press the MENU button (on the grey rectangle), with this we acces to the configuration menuAhora presiono el botón MENU (en el recuadro gris). con ello accedemos al menú de configuración.

I pulse the right arrow (orange box) to go to the second menu.

Now with the down arrow (blue box) i go to the personalitzated WB option and i touch SET (pink rectangle).

Now what we see is the photo which has been done to the white backgroung, the SET button is touched again, right arrow and again SET. With that what our camera has to understand as “white” has been stablished and will be calibrated by it automatically in every photo.

Getting ready for the picture:

We haveto press the MENU button and we go back to the camera. If we have done all that from the screen we saw in the picture above we will return to it, if not, we will go to the previsualitzation one, if this happens, touch the button with the small camera and we will see the configuration options.

I’m going to explain what is in every box:

In the red one we see the camera mode, in that case M (Manual).

In green we see the shooter speed (it means the time it has to catch light when the photo is done).

In yellow we see the aperture represented with an F (it is the option to do picture to an object, a group or a complete scene: depending on the value).

In blue it is the ISO which has to be ever on 100 due it is the real value.

In grey is the Q button, it allows us to edit and move in the menu. If we want to edit a value we have to touch Q key, the direction arrows to get the desired parameter, SET to select and when we are in, again the arrows and set to select. I use the parameters you could see in the picture for my camera, but any of you could need another due ytour situation, light and kind of figure.

Doing the photography:

Once all is configurated (maybe you will need to do some tryal pictures), we are going to do the deffinitive photo. we touch again the button with the small camera and we will see the previsualitzation mode (or you could see trough the viewfinder, as you want).

We display the figure we wanted to photograph. first we stablish the zoom level, i recommend that the model fill a big part letting only a small gapas above and below (remember that you could bring close up to 25cm, even near and the objective will not focus). With the direction arrows, we move the small square (it is what will focus the most) to the zone we want the best focus, when we get it, we press a bit the shooter and when the camera focus we press firmly (that only if we have te autofocus on, if not, manually move the objective tip until it focus properly and press. The picture is done.

Revising the picture before sending this to the pc:

Before turning off the camera is recommendable to check the photography done, for that i touch the play button (in the orange box).

Now we touch the button which i’ve put the light blue box some times until the picture doesn’t grow any more, and we look for the detail zone to asure that all is perfectly focused and we could go to the next phase on the computer.

If you have another kind, brand, or model of reflex camera, the process will be the same, only having in mind the small variations in the menus, button position etc will change.

The next week we will se a practical demostration of what we have to do to it with the image edition programs. You could see the past entries dedicated to that topic: Taking photos to miniatures part 1, where i show you the different and best known camera typologies of nowadays; Taking photos to miniatures part 2, where i explain how to configurate all the options to get the best pics posible; Taking photos to miniatures part 3, where y analize whole photographic material we could need; Taking photos to miniatures part 4, where you could see so many options to compose your scene or photographic set; Taking photos to miniatures part 5, where you could see with which programs you could edit pictures bot paying and so decent alternatives of freeware and Taking photos to our miniatures part 6, where you could see what we have to retouch on our photos.
